ABOUT SHARYN

Professor Sharyn Rundle-Thiele is Director, Social Marketing @ Griffith and Editor-in-Chief, Journal of Social Marketing. Drawing on her commercial marketing background Sharyn’s research focuses on applying marketing tools and techniques to change behaviour for the better.

Sharyn's mission

We should not do what we have always done. Her work in social marketing is testing current social marketing practice. Her mission is to build an evidence base to clearly establish what works. She wants to be able to clearly tell social marketers what they should do to get sustained change.

Her projects

Leave it: ‘Leave It’ is a social marketing pilot study aiming to reduce koala and domestic dog clashes in a local city council in Australia. A co-design activity put the focus on the dogs rather than koalas. The program should be fun and involve dog training resulted in DogFest. The festival featured seminars, obedience displays and free micro-chipping to launch the ‘Leave It’ program. Results show that dogs trained to ‘leave it’ are more likely to live in harmony with native Australian wildlife.

Waste Not Want Not: The project aimed to help residents to save time and money and showed them how they could use the food already in their fridge to cook delicious and healthy meals. Teaming up with Redland City Council, the Waste Not Want Not campaign rolled out in Stocklands Shopping Centre in Cleveland as a two-week pilot project. Dominique Rizzo cooked delicious and healthy meals each day. Passers received free tastings, chopping boards, shopping list notepads and shopping bags.

Blurred Minds: This is a cutting-edge alcohol education program that features five lessons and uses a suite of gamification resources to engage and deliver important messages to Australian high-school students. In this project, he has developed world’s first Virtual Reality house party simulation experience which immerses students into a live-action adventure.
