Support to study modern Greek
Part of Brisbane’s Greek community, the Lexion Alliance offers program and course scholarships to support students studying modern Greek language through cross-institutional study with Flinders University (online). The Lexion Alliance also offers honours scholarships to students writing a dissertation with a theme relevant to the Greek community in Queensland and/or Australia.

Scholarship details
Program scholarships
To be eligible for a program scholarship, you must:
- be an Australian Citizen, Permanent Resident or Permanent Humanitarian Visa Holder
- be enrolled in, or eligible for admission into, the Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Languages and Linguistics, Bachelor of International Business, or any other degree allowing a major in Modern Greek Language
- be full-time or part-time at Griffith University.
Course/s scholarships
To be eligible for a course scholarship, you must:
- be an Australian Citizen, Permanent Resident or Permanent Humanitarian Visa Holder
- be enrolled in a Griffith University undergraduate degree
- be enrolled in a Modern Greek Language or Cultural Studies course as an elective.
Honours scholarships
To be eligible for an honours scholarship, you must:
- be an Australian Citizen, Permanent Resident, Permanent Humanitarian Visa Holder, New Zealand Citizen, or International Student
- be enrolled in, or eligible for admission into, any honours degree at Griffith University
- be accepted for a proposed dissertation on a theme relevant to the Greek community in Australia.

Value
Value varies depending on the three scholarship types available.
Program scholarships
Program scholarships may be awarded to students enrolled in the Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Languages and Linguistics, Bachelor of International Business, or any other degree allowing a major in Modern Greek Language.
Maximum value for a program scholarship is $9,600 per scholarship paid in instalments. Instalments of $1,200 are payable for each Modern Greek Language course (i.e. Requirements at Flinders University for completion of a full Modern Greek major is eight courses: six language topics and two culture topics) up to the maximum value of the scholarship, provided conditions are met.
Course scholarships
Course scholarships may be awarded to students undertaking individual courses in modern Greek language or cultural studies as elective/s in their Griffith University degree.
Maximum value for a course scholarship is $1,200 per course, provided conditions are met.
Honours scholarships
Honours scholarships may be awarded to students undertaking any Honours degree with a dissertation relevant to the Greek community.
Maximum value for an honours scholarship is $4,800 per scholarship paid in instalments of $2,400 for each enrolled trimester up to the maximum value of the scholarship, provided conditions are met.
Payment
Payments are made up to six weeks after the census date subject to the recipient satisfying the scholarship terms and conditions.
To remain eligible for the scholarship, you will be required to satisfying the following conditions.
Program scholarships
To remain eligible for a program scholarship, recipients must:
- remain enrolled at Griffith University in either the Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Languages and Linguistics, Bachelor of International Business or any other degree allowing a major in Modern Greek Language
- maintain good academic progress at Griffith University
- complete one Modern Greek Language course in each trimester over six consecutive trimesters (courses must be completed sequentially. In order to complete a major in Modern Greek, students are required to complete two culture topics only. These will be paid in the trimester for which they are undertaken as an additional instalment of $1,200. Choice of culture topics must be in line with the Flinders University's Program of Study Information. Students must maintain a passing grade in each language course to retain the scholarship. A fail will result in no scholarship payment for that course and if the student does not re-sit and pass, the scholarship will be forfeited)
- not defer this scholarship. Students wishing to defer the commencement of their degree must reapply for the scholarship in the year they commence their degree.
Program scholarship recipients may seek a leave of absence for up to a maximum of one year due to extenuating personal circumstances or medical reasons supported by a doctor's certificate.
Course/s scholarships
To remain eligible for a course scholarship, recipients must:
- remain enrolled at Griffith University in an eligible program
- maintain good academic progress at Griffith University
- maintain a passing grade in each language course to be eligible for further individual course in Modern Greek Language and/or Modern Greek Cultural Studies.
If the student fails any one course, they may re-sit it, however no scholarship payment will be due for the re-sit. The recipient may then continue to receive a scholarship payment for future language courses if they pass the re-sit.
If the scholarship recipient fails one course and does not re-sit in the following trimester, they forfeit all scholarship payments for future courses and are not eligible to re-apply (they do not have to repay the $1,200 for the failed course).
Honours scholarships
To remain eligible for an honours scholarship, recipients must:
- remain enrolled at Griffith University in the honours program for which the scholarship was awarded
- maintain good academic progress at Griffith University.
Honours scholarship recipients may seek leave of absence for up to a maximum of one year due to extenuating personal circumstances or medical reasons supported by a doctor's certificate.
Honours scholarship recipients cannot defer this scholarship. Students wishing to defer the commencement of their degree must reapply for the scholarship in the year they commence their degree.
All scholarships
The above conditions are verified each trimester at census date. If a scholarship recipient fails to successfully meet these conditions, scholarship payments may be withheld, or the scholarship may be terminated.

Applicants may be shortlisted and be required to provide additional information.
Griffith University reserves the right to withdraw an advertised scholarship at any time.

Lexion Alliance was formed in Brisbane in March 2013 by a group of individuals and organisations in the Greek community to actively promote the study of modern Greek language at university.
Modern Greek was introduced into selected primary and secondary schools in Queensland during the 1980s due to the initiative of Dr Con Castan. It wasn't until 2014, when Griffith University introduced the online course through a partnership with Flinders University, that modern Greek was offered at a tertiary level in Queensland.
Lexion Alliance offers a number of scholarships to undergraduate students interested in learning modern Greek, including all students who have an interest in learning Greek, have Greek heritage and would like to learn Greek.
Lexion Alliance's support extends beyond just financial assistance to enable students to pursue academic excellence in these programs.
The Alliance also offers opportunities for motivated students to mingle with the Greek community in South East Queensland to improve their language skills or embrace the Greek culture.
