This bursary assists an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander student with the additional costs associated with studying medicine and health at university.
The bursary is aimed at applicants who can demonstrate financial disadvantage.

Scholarship details
To be eligible, you must be:
- an Australian citizen or permanent resident
- Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander
- accepted into or enrolled in a program in the field of medicine or health in 2024.

Personal background
- Income and expenditure: Demonstrate financial disadvantage by either being in receipt of a means-tested Commonwealth income support payment or a comprehensive assessment by the University.
Statements
- Personal statement: In 500 words or less, outline how the bursary would benefit your studies at Griffith University and support your aspiration and goals for a career in the degree you are studying.
- Challenges statement: In 250 words or less, outline challenges you have faced or overcome.
Shortlist information
Priority is to be given to students studying in the School of Medicine and Dentistry.
If there is no suitable applicant, the bursary may be awarded to a student studying in a health program.
Value
Maximum value is $2,000, payable in a single instalment.
Payment
Payments are made within six weeks after the census date, subject to the recipient satisfying scholarship terms and conditions.
Payment is made after census on confirmation the recipient is enrolled at Griffith University and still meets eligibility requirements.
Applications must be completed and submitted by the closing date.
Offers are made via email.
Applicants may be shortlisted and be required to provide additional information.
Griffith University reserves the right to withdraw an advertised scholarship at any time.

The Nellie Thomas Bursary was founded in 2008 in memory of Nellie Bertha (McDowell) Baker and Thomas McDowell.
The aim of the bursary is to assist an Indigenous student studying in the fields of medicine or health.
