Studying Islam-West relations at Griffith, you will delve into the histories, cultures and societies of the Islamic world. You'll expand your global awareness to understand a religion that influences one quarter of the globe's population in over 50 countries.

At Griffith our program is designed to stimulate thought and enhance understanding. You'll be equipped with the knowledge and skills needed to respond to the challenges of international peace and security, migration and integration, identity and coexistence.

Study Islam-West relations at Griffith

Learn from leading academics in the field

Our teaching staff are recognised nationally as leaders in research, including Associate Professor Halim Rane, who was named Australian Teacher of the Year 2015.

You’ll learn about Islamic beliefs and practices, origins and history, and sacred scripture. You’ll also examine the most complex debates within Islam and the West today, including contemporary Muslim thought, Islamic law, human rights, democracy, integration, jihad and conflict in the context of Islam-West relations.

Study options

Form connections and relationships through global opportunities

You’ll have the opportunity to undertake short term study tours to the Muslim-majority countries of Malaysia, Turkey and Morocco. Held over the third trimester, the Muslim Study Tour involves activities including special lectures at partner institutions and visits to historical sites and popular tourist attractions. You will also gain credit towards your degree.

Professor Halim Rane

Associate Professor Halim Rane is an internationally recognised scholar in the field of Islamic studies. Awarded the Australian University Teacher of the Year in 2015, Professor Rane is well respected for his outstanding contributions to student learning at Griffith.

'My focus has always been on my students and the skills and knowledge they need to be competent in the field of Islam-West relations and beyond,' he says.

Halim developed the University's unique suite of Islamic studies with a contemporary, secular focus on Islam-West relations. The course also features a Muslim World Study Tour to Malaysia, Turkey, Spain and Morocco, which offers students a first-hand opportunity to engage with a diversity of people, cultures and societies with deep roots in Islamic civilisation.
